Notetaking on Camera Techniques
INTERVIEWING:
• What seven items should you bring with you when you are shooting an interview?

Microphone

Light
• Shooting into a light source = silhouette
• Where do you want your light source?
Behind the camera
• On what object should you focus the camera?
On a person's nose
White balance adjusts the iris setting. Make sure you white balance the camera before taking a shot at a new location or with a different lightening.
• No tripod = bad
• Date and Time = never
• SP(Standard play)/EP(Extended play)
• Camera shoots in SP .
• Pre-Roll- record 3-5 seconds before the interview
• Post-Roll- record 3-5 seconds after the intrerview.
CAMERA SHOTS:
***BACKGROUND: Dynamic - has some depth, not plain. Interviewee is at least 6-8 feet away from the wall. Interviewee IS the shot, not a poster.
• 1 Shot=middle of the chest to above the head. microphones are not to be seen.
• 1 Shot with graphic=over the shoulder graphic (OTS graphic)
• 2 Shot=Still middle of the chest to above the head, but only during a show. only for anchors.
• CU-Close Up
• MS-Medium Shot
• LS-Long Shot
• ECU-Extreme Close Up
• Rule of thirds-place the important elements on the upper line.
CAMERA MOVEMENTS:
• Tilt-up and down
• Pan-left and right
• Zoom-closer and further away
• Dolly-camera on wheels
LIGHTS
• Key-Main bright light usually from the side.
• Fill-fills in the shadows
• Back-Opposite of the key light. Separates the interviewee from the background.
MICROPHONES:
• Unidirectional-picks up sound from the one direction.
• Omnidirectional-comes from all directions. Microphone on a camera in omnidirectional.
• Cardiod-shapes like a heart (unidirectional)
• Lav/Lapel Microphone-Ones we clip on interviewees' shirts. All we have.
• Boom Microphone-microphone on a pole.Usually unidirectional and picks up only from the area it heads.
